Cleaning and Maintaining Exterior Wood Doors

By Gretchen Sawatzki

Exterior wood doors get blasted by ultra violet light, winter weather, rain, and so much more. Now that it's spring it's time to take care of that tired door. Bi-annual maintenance will help keep your door in great condition all year round. Use these three simple steps to protect your exterior wood door and its finish.

1). Bust that dust! Taking a dust cloth, lightly dust both the interior and exterior of your door. Removing excess dirt can prevent moisture retention. Dust can absorb and hold moisture on humid days  and damp evenings, so brush off those dust bunnies. It only takes a minute.

2). Goodbye grime! After dusting, take a light polish or cleanser to remove the dirt and grime that has accumulated on the surface of the door. Whatever you do, do not use water to clean your door. You don't want the wood to retain moisture. Try using a non-abrasive cleanser instead. Working in small areas apply Regular Kotton Klenser in a thin layer using a paint brush. For the extra grimey areas apply the cleanser with gloves and a fine grit, 4/0 steel wool. Leave on for a few minutes until it has lightly penetrated the dirt and wipe off thoroughly. Don't let it sit for too long though, it might eat your finish away. For stubborn areas, rub with 4/0 steel wool and repeat this step again if necessary.

3).  Protect and serve! After you've removed the grime it's time to condition and protect that finish. Try using a uv inhibitor like Howard SunShield. Using a cloth, apply the inhibitor liberally being sure to work it into the nooks and crannies! Using a clean cloth wipe the excess off. Repeat this process if necessary. Remembering this step will protect your door from the effects of uv light and ensure that your door will serve you well into the future.
