By Gretchen Sawatzki

‘Tis the season for cold feet, frozen pipes, and leaky windows, but with this easy checklist winterizing your home can be simple! If you haven’t thought about it yet, don’t worry because we’ve got you covered. Remember - inspect, react, and prevent for a warm and cozy winter!

-                Inspect weatherstripping around door frames and windows for leaks
-                Replace weatherstripping, if necessary
-                Replace your screens with storm doors and storm windows
-                Inspect exterior trim for rot and replace, if necessary
-                Caulk around windows and door frames
-                Insulate drafty openings with shrink plastic
-                Install draft stoppers to the bottom of your doors

HVAC
-                Inspect firebox and flue for soot and creosote
-                Inspect fireplace damper for a tight seal
-                Replace your furnace filter
-                Clean your humidifiers
-                Remove air conditioners from windows
-                Switch fans to the clockwise position to keep warm air closer to the floor
-                Install a programmable thermostat
-                Inspect air ducts and make repairs, if necessary

-                Drain the outdoor faucets and hoses to the last drop
-                Insulate pipes using fiberglass or foil sleeves, especially those adjacent to exterior walls, under sinks and in crawlspaces

Roof and Gutters
-                Inspect roof for loose, warped, or damaged shingles
-                Clean gutters of leaves and debris
-                Inspect gutters and downspouts to keep water away from your home’s foundation
